The Island School

Bainbridge Island, Washington

This complete renovation and addition to a private 115-student K-5 school on Bainbridge Island, includes a 6,500 sf classroom addition and a 4,800 sf Multi-Purpose addition. The design more than tripled the School’s footprint while maintaining the founding aesthetic of warmth, intimate scale, and an inspired atmosphere of learning. Central to the design is an active courtyard enclosed by sky lit hallways, providing a transparent integration point which floods the building with light. The simple gabled forms, refined wood detailing and expansive windows of James Cutler’s original 1983 design were maintained as the architectural focus and inspiration.
